Anan and Chao are an amazing power couple from China that I have had the incredible opportunity to work with. They grew up in a city just outside of Beijing and moved to the US to continue their post doctorate studies four years ago. I feel honored to have had the chance to support them as they learn something not taught in the classroom: what it is like to become parents!
Anan was 41 weeks along when she admitted into Labor and Delivery at the University of Utah on 1/3/2018. She breathed through her contractions and managed this brand new experience like a champ all through the night, her husband Chao was at her side giving unwavering support and encouragement.
I was asked to join them on 1/4/2018 and gave emotional and physical support to Anan as she was given pitocin to help with labor progression and an epidural. At 1300 on the 4th it was time for Anan to start pushing with the encouragement from her husband and the MD's at the U. As her doula I helped to coach her pushing efforts, assisted with positioning, offered massages on her arms, neck, shoulders, and head, and I provided emotional support as the pushing phase continued longer than expected.
Anan is one of the strongest women I have ever met! She pushed like a star for 2 hours and 15 minutes and was so grateful to finally meet her first born: a baby boy named David.
The birth was a bit challenging for David because the pushing phase lasted for a while and there was the presence of meconium. Chao was right by his side as the doctors cleared his airway and provided oxygen to give him the best start to life. He had the chance to meet his mom before spending a few hours in the NICU for continued monitoring and stabilization, thankfully the prognosis is looking great. Chao went to the NICU with his son and I stayed with Anan and continued to give support as we talked to medical staff about David and start the recovery process. Her only wishes are that he is healthy and knows that mom and dad love him with all of their hearts.
